The Alpenglow serves as a preview of Alpine's forthcoming design direction while spotlighting its innovative internal-combustion engine, engineered to utilize hydrogen as fuel. Unlike traditional petrol engines, hydrogen combustion emits zero carbon emissions, although it may produce nitrogen oxides.

Methods like urea-based selective catalytic reduction, commonly found in diesel engines, can mitigate these emissions.

Given its carbon-free nature, hydrogen has garnered attention from both automakers and motorsports bodies as a sustainable solution for preserving the internal-combustion engine amidst growing concerns about carbon emissions.

Carbon-neutral e-fuels present another viable option, generated by combining hydrogen with CO2 extracted from the atmosphere.

Formula 1 has announced plans to integrate e-fuels into its races by 2026, while the ACO, organizers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, aims to establish a hydrogen-powered race car class by the same year.

Last year, the ACO unveiled the MissionH24 hydrogen-electric concept, showcasing an electric propulsion system primarily fueled by a hydrogen fuel cell stack.

This concept is set to hit the Spa racetrack on May 11. Toyota also joined the hydrogen-powered race car trend with the introduction of the GR H2 Racing concept.

Alpine currently offers only the gas-powered A110 sports car, the brand is transitioning towards electric vehicles (EVs). The A290 hot hatch, Alpine's first EV, is slated for release later this year. Looking ahead, Alpine is developing a compact crossover and an electric successor to the A110, anticipated around 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Alpine executives have hinted at the development of two larger crossovers, targeting segments akin to Porsche's Macan and Cayenne. These models are expected to debut starting in 2027, coinciding with Alpine's entry into the U.S. market.
