A290 Hot Hatch: The First of Many
The first new model, the subcompact A290 hot hatch, was revealed on Thursday in Le Mans, just ahead of the famous 24-hour race. This marks the beginning of Alpine’s ambitious plan to diversify its lineup. The A290 will be followed by a compact GT crossover, a redesigned A110 sports car, a four-door coupe reviving the A310 name, and potentially two larger crossovers aimed at competing with Porsche's Macan and Cayenne.
Distinctive Features and Performance
While future Alpine models will be standalone designs, the A290 shares its platform with Renault's 5 E-Tech. At 157 inches in length, it matches the Renault in size but features a 2.4-inch wider track for a sportier stance. Utilizing aluminum construction, the A290 maintains a relatively low weight of 3,260 pounds for an EV.
The A290 is built on the AmpR Small platform, a cost-effective version of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance's CMF-B EV platform. The A290's front axle houses a single motor with power outputs ranging from 180 hp in the base and GT Premium grades to 220 hp in the GT Performance and GTS grades. All models have a 52-kWh battery, offering an estimated range of 236 miles on the WLTP cycle. This range is expected to be lower when tested under the U.S. EPA cycle.
The fastest version of the A290 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds, showcasing its impressive performance credentials.
Design and Interior
Alpine has differentiated the A290 from its Renault counterpart with unique styling and performance enhancements. The A290 features additional front driving lights, aerodynamic elements to increase downforce, a widened track, and distinctive 19-inch wheels inspired by the original A310 sports car of the 1970s.
Inside, the A290 boasts sporty bucket seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and carbon fiber-like trim. Digital screens serve as the gauge cluster and infotainment system, the latter angled towards the driver for convenience. Physical buttons for frequently used functions like climate control are positioned on the center stack. Despite its compact dimensions, the A290 can accommodate five passengers and offers approximately 11.5 cubic feet of rear storage space.
Production and Availability
Deliveries of the A290 are set to begin in 2025 in markets where Alpine currently operates. Production will take place at a facility in Douai, France.
With this expansion, Alpine aims to solidify its position in the EV market, offering a range of models that combine performance, style, and advanced technology. The upcoming lineup promises to cater to various preferences and needs, marking an exciting new chapter for the French performance marque.
