Following its record-breaking runs at Hockenheim in June and the Goodwood Hillclimb, the McMurtry Spéirling has now set a new benchmark at Castle Combe, completing a lap in less than a minute.
McMurtry Spéirling
The Spéirling clocked in at an astonishing 54.559 seconds on the 1.85-mile track a remarkable feat considering the previous record of 58.596 seconds set by a Formula 3 car in 2021. For context, the fastest lap ever recorded by a GT3 car at Castle Combe was 1:04.355, achieved by a Lamborghini Huracan in 2022.
While this recent lap by the Spéirling was part of a testing session and not an official record attempt, it's still a staggering achievement. Especially impressive is the fact that the Spéirling was running at only 80 percent of its power, with a top speed limited to 155 mph. This suggests that the car has even greater potential yet to be unleashed.
Castle Combe, located just half an hour from McMurtry's Gloucestershire base, has become a familiar testing ground for the Spéirling since 2021. The car's impressive performance has been a hot topic among local enthusiasts. Earlier this year, in April, Validation Prototype 1 of the Spéirling set a lap time of 55.4 seconds with Max Chilton, a former Formula 1 driver, behind the wheel. Chilton, who has been behind the record-breaking laps, commented that the latest time "demonstrates the potential in the car for our customers to achieve the same at their local or favorite circuits." Given that the Spéirling is already outpacing Formula 3 cars, one can only imagine the spectacle it will create on any given track day. Track marshals might be left scratching their heads as the Spéirling blitzes by.
Next up on McMurtry's agenda is the prestigious Monterey Car Week, where the Spéirling will aim to add another record to its growing list of achievements. The car is set to tackle the Laguna Seca reverse corkscrew hillclimb on the 10th and 11th of August, with Chilton once again at the wheel. With 1,000 horsepower at its disposal, the Spéirling is a force to be reckoned with, and it would take a brave soul to bet against it. Given its performance and exclusivity, the £895,000 price tag (plus taxes and delivery) might even seem like a bargain by Monterey standards.
As the McMurtry Spéirling continues to push the boundaries of what's possible on the track, it’s clear that this revolutionary car is just getting started. The automotive world is watching closely to see what it will conquer next.
If Chinese tech giant Xiaomi hasn't yet made an impact in the automotive world, its latest feat at Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife should change that.
