More Power Under the Hood

The 2025 Golf R sees a slight but meaningful boost in performance. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine now cranks out 328 horsepower an increase from the previous model’s 315 hp. VW hasn’t revealed the exact tweaks responsible for the extra power, but it's likely similar to the setup found in the 20th Anniversary Edition before it was detuned for the U.S. market.

Thanks to this upgrade, the Golf R can sprint from 0-62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. As before, power is routed to all four wheels through Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, and the standard transmission remains a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. One controversial element makes a return touch-sensitive climate and volume controls. While VW hasn’t confirmed if they’re now backlit, the previous model’s lack of illumination was a sore point among buyers.

Additionally, an updated Golf GTI will launch alongside the Golf R. These two performance-focused variants remain the only Golf models available in the U.S., as VW has streamlined its lineup for North America.
